Keeping your teeth healthy for life
Dr. Burden does a thorough exam so that he can understand the patient’s situation. This includes reviewing the patient’s dental history as well as medical history so that he can plan treatment that will be best for him or her.
Dr. Burden’s objective is to help the patient keep their teeth by improving their oral health through dental care and education. He also believes in preserving teeth whenever he can by using conservative and minimally invasive procedures.
New Patient Exam
Get ready for a thorough exam
Maintaining good oral health is all about early detection and prevention. Dr. Burden provides a comprehensive introductory dental exam to be able to give an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
Meeting with the doctor
When you meet with Dr. Burden, he will discuss your goals for both your oral health and smile. For example, if you’re wondering what to do about missing teeth, he will discuss the different options available. He will answer any questions, as well as address any concerns and create a treatment plan precisely right for you.
Dr. Burden will also review your medical history and, where necessary, will consult with your primary care physician concerning any health problems, medications, etc., so your overall health is taken into consideration and medical approvals received before any procedure begins.
Dr. Burden will review your X-rays and show you what’s going on in your mouth, making certain you understand any areas of concern.Your next step is to get high-speed, low-dose digital X-rays. Our digital X-rays emit far less radiation than conventional X-rays. These computer-aided X-rays provide images of unmatched quality, and make it easier for Dr. Burden to identify and diagnose the current state of your oral health.
Periodontal (gum) examDr. Burden takes intraoral photos of your mouth and teeth so that you can get a clear picture of what is happening in real time.
Dr. Burden will determine the state of your gums and how much, if any, periodontal care is needed to treat any gum disease.
Oral cancer screening
Dr. Burden performs an oral cancer exam on each new patient. Although it’s rare to find anything, an oral cancer screening can detect a problem before it has a chance to develop into anything more serious.
Dr. Burden wants you to have an attractive, healthy smile. He’ll give you a smile evaluation and ask what you’d like to change about your smile, (including missing or crooked teeth, broken or chipped teeth or discoloration).
For patients interested in Cosmetic Dentistry, we use “SNAP!” cosmetic imaging software that shows your smile now, and after your treatment, showing whatever smile improvements you want to make.
TMJ and bite exam
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an important part of your jaw and all-around oral health. When this joint is out of place or misaligned, it can cause a ‘popping’ or ‘clicking’ noise, headaches as well as an incorrect bite.
A poor bite can cause problems eating, wearing away the surfaces of your teeth through grinding, as well as sleep apnea. Dr. Burden will check your TMJ to see if it needs to be adjusted and check your bite for proper alignment to make sure it has a good range of motion.

Gentle, thorough Teeth Cleanings by our experienced hygienists
It’s a fact, gum disease is the primary cause of adult tooth loss in the United States. Good dental hygiene is the first step in the prevention of gum disease and the foundation for good oral health.
When you visit us, you can expect gentle, thorough cleanings by our friendly, experienced hygienists who care about your oral health and who will answer any questions you have.
Ultrasonic CleaningOur hygienists believe in educating each patient to help them better preserve their teeth. Each of our hygienists takes the time to teach patients how to brush and floss correctly, demonstrating by showing pictures of the inside of the patient’s own mouth to pinpoint target areas for cleaning.
Our hygienists are caring and thorough in their cleaning. One of their tools is the ultrasonic scaler, used to eliminate heavy stains, calcium deposits on your teeth and as an alternative for when a patient has inflamed gums or is wearing braces.
Polishing with our ProphyJet®
We use a ProphyJet to polish your teeth to a nice smooth finish as well as to remove lighter stains. The ProphyJet uses air, water and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and is very easy on the gums, as well giving your teeth a bright polished finish.
Deep cleaning is needed to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from the gum pocket (space between the gum and tooth) when the pocket depth is too deep for a patient to reach. This is generally for pocket depths exceeding 4-5 mm. When the deposits are removed the gum can once again attach to the tooth. Deep cleaning consists of scaling (removing the deposits) and root planing (smoothing the root out).
Our office uses state-of-the-art lasers to bring you more efficient and comfortable deep cleaning by one of our four, highly trained hygienists. Read more about our Laser Gum Disease Treatment.
